A safe household is built through prevention, detection, escape, and response. Test smoke and CO alarms, check age and end-of-life signals, and follow manufacturer placement instructions and local code. Smoke alarms belong in bedrooms, outside sleeping areas, and on every level; CO alarms should be placed according to the manufacturer and local requirements. Interconnect alarms where feasible, so one alert can be heard throughout the home. Keep spare batteries only for compatible models; sealed-battery alarms have different maintenance needs.
Write and practice two exits from sleeping areas, meeting point, and a call-for-help plan. Keep exits clear and make sure every person can operate locks. Secure heavy furniture, water heaters, and shelves against earthquake risk; address trip hazards and fire load. A fire extinguisher must match likely fire classes, be accessible, and be used only when the fire is small, the user is trained, and the exit is clear. Leave immediately if any of those conditions fail. Never bypass alarms or use a generator, grill, or camp stove indoors.
Personal security should emphasize lighting, locks maintained to code, neighbor check-ins, privacy, and de-escalation. Avoid traps, weapons claims, or advice that increases risk. Call local fire, utility, or building professionals for installations and code-sensitive questions.
Expanded operating detail — Alarms, fire response and passive safety
Use a layered safety design: prevention, detection, escape, communication, and response. Separate CO (carbon monoxide) from CO₂ (carbon dioxide). Combustion and generators pose a CO hazard. CO alarms must be listed/approved for their intended use, placed and maintained per maker and code. Smoke alarms cover bedrooms, adjacent sleeping areas, and every level, with interconnection where required or feasible. Test alarms and check age/expiration.
Security recommendations should be passive, lawful and non-escalatory: use properly installed door/window locks, reinforce strike plates with compatible long screws where the door/frame permits, keep exits operable, use battery door/window chimes as supplemental alerts, add lights and neighbor check-ins, and avoid traps or unsafe barricades. A tarp across a door is weather cover or privacy, not a security barrier; it must never block a required exit.
- Existing First Alert CO400 battery CO alarm, 2-pack — ASIN B002GP7CZS(candidate) and First Alert SMI100 smoke alarm, 2-pack — ASIN B0CJLN45JZ(candidate): confirm current model and applicable local placement/code requirements before quantity recommendations.
- First Alert 120 dB battery door/window alarm — ASIN B0CRB36VPB(candidate)** — marketplace search maps this ASIN to a door-open chime/alarm product, but the exact brand/model/variant must be checked before publication; use as an entry notification only, not a security system.
- Existing First Alert HOME1 ABC extinguisher — ASIN B01LTICQYE(candidate): quantity and placement depend on layout and code; train occupants and keep an exit open.
- Existing LuxoGear whistles, 2-pack — ASIN B07RNNMZW3(candidate): two packs for four people.
- Existing CARTMAN tarp — ASIN B089PY2LCV(candidate): temporary outdoor cover; not a door shield/security solution.
Part 8 KIT
Detection and response
A KIT is a subset of one shared household inventory. Items marked "shared" appear in other parts — count them once. This is not a complete 90-day plan.

Additional linked kit items
- Detection and response: First Alert CO400 battery CO alarms, 2-pack (NP-051)(candidate), First Alert SMI100 smoke alarms, 2-pack (NP-052)(candidate), and First Alert HOME1 ABC extinguisher (NP-050)(candidate). Confirm alarm quantity/placement by the home layout, product instructions and code.
- Passive entry awareness and exit readiness: battery door/window alarm candidate (NP-053)(candidate), Energizer headlamp (NP-023)(candidate), and LuxoGear whistles (NP-037)(candidate). The door alarm ASIN’s precise brand/variant needs verification. CO means carbon monoxide, not carbon dioxide; alarms do not make unsafe combustion appliance use safe.
Household-specific actions no product covers
- Installation, alarm coverage quantity, escape ladders where appropriate, and professional inspection depend on the dwelling.
How to size it and remaining 90-day gaps
Map detectors and extinguishers to every required room/floor and local code. Verify alarms are correct type/power/interconnected and not expired. Alarm and extinguisher counts are determined by dwelling/code, not family size alone.
