New to preparing? Begin with small, calm steps.
You don't need a bunker or a big budget. Most of being prepared is a little planning and a few basics at home.
Week 1 — Take stock
- Walk through your home and list what you already have
- Find your flashlights and check the batteries
- Locate your first-aid kit and any regular medications
Week 2 — Cover the basics
- Set aside some water for each person and pet
- Add a few shelf-stable foods you already enjoy
- Keep a light source in an easy-to-find spot
Week 3 — Make a family plan
- Pick a meeting spot near home and one farther away
- Choose an out-of-area contact everyone can call
- Write it all on a wallet-sized card
Week 4 — Connect with neighbors
- Introduce yourself to a few nearby households
- Offer to swap phone numbers
- Talk about how you'd check on each other
