Shelter means keeping people dry, warm or cool enough, rested, and protected from weather while avoiding CO, fire, and unsafe structural conditions. Identify the room best suited to shelter in place and the location to evacuate to. Seal drafts only when it does not block required ventilation or combustion air. Use layered clothing, bedding, curtains, and safe room zoning before adding fuel-burning heat. Never use ovens, grills, or outdoor heaters as indoor heating sources.

For hot weather, plan shade, airflow, hydration, cooling centers, and medical check-ins; fans do not prevent heat illness when air is dangerously hot. For cold weather, use approved equipment and follow ventilation and clearance requirements. Prepare rain protection, tarps for temporary weather cover, repair materials, and a way to keep sleeping areas dry. A tarp is not a structural repair and must be secured without creating hazards. Protect stored supplies from flooding and freeze.

Expanded operating detail — Safe heating and climate decisions

Heat is not solved by buying a portable heater. First determine whether the home has a code-compliant, installed heat source; whether it can operate without grid power; whether pipes can freeze; and what indoor temperature forces relocation. Assemble sleeping bags/blankets, layered clothing, warm socks, hats, insulated curtains, and a safe room. For dangerous cold or heat, relocate to an official warming/cooling center or another safe building; do not wait for the fuel stock to run out.

Expanded operating detail — Shelter, temporary repair and family morale

Shelter and security must account for heat loss, water intrusion, broken windows, blocked exits, sleep, privacy, child/pet safety and repairs. Keep a weather-rated tarp, compatible rope/tie-downs, duct tape, plastic sheeting, work gloves, eye protection, headlamps, basic hand tools, and a clear no-go/evacuation threshold. Use temporary covers only if they do not create unsafe loads or block ventilation/egress. Structural/electrical/gas repairs need qualified professionals.

Existing shelter/weather product links: CARTMAN 8×10 tarp(candidate), ANYOO poncho(candidate), Energizer headlamp(candidate), Consciot lanterns(candidate). Add a documented household repair list and source weather-specific clothing/blankets in the right sizes. For temporary broken-window/weather cover, keep correctly sized 6-mil plastic sheeting and heavy-duty tape, following local emergency instructions. Do not block exits, required ventilation, or combustion-air openings. Example tape link: Duck Brand Max Strength duct tape — ASIN B002O16SHC(candidate). Plastic sheeting varies by roll size; choose and audit an exact offer before a product card is published.

Morale and low-power activity are operationally useful across a 90-day disruption. Build an activity box with a mix of different ages/skill levels: Bicycle cards, two decks(candidate), Mattel UNO(candidate), Crayola Twistables, 50 count(candidate), plus a paper journal, puzzle books, pencils, reading material, chess/checkers or another familiar board game. Plan scheduled recreation, exercise, quiet time and shared chores; do not make all entertainment dependent on a phone or television.

How to size it and remaining 90-day gaps

One size-correct rain layer/person, sleep insulation appropriate to lowest expected indoor temperature, multiple tarps/repair points as scenario requires, and safe drainage/ventilation/egress. Tarp is not a structural door barricade or heat source.
