Starting a neighbor contact list
A short, voluntary contact list is one of the most useful — and friendliest — things a street can share.
Knowing your neighbors is one of the best ways to be prepared. A simple contact list makes it easier to check on each other during a storm or outage — and it's a nice excuse to say hello.
Start with a few doors
You don't need the whole street. Begin with the two or three households closest to you. A friendly note or a quick chat at the mailbox is plenty.
Keep it voluntary and simple
Ask if they'd like to share a name and phone number. Keep the list short, share it only with people who joined, and let anyone opt out at any time.
Note who might need a hand
If someone is comfortable sharing that they'd appreciate a check-in — an older neighbor, a new parent, someone who relies on medical equipment — note it kindly and privately.
Keep a paper copy
Phones can run out of battery. Write the list on paper too and keep it with your kit. Any notebook works; a weatherproof one like the Rite in the Rain No. 373 notebook holds up if it gets damp. A charged battery pack, such as the INIU portable charger, helps keep your phone ready for calls.
Refresh it once a year
People move and numbers change. Once a year, send a quick message asking everyone to confirm their details.
Optional extras
You don't need to buy anything to start a contact list. If you'd like these, they're suggestions based on features and common use, not products we've personally tested.
