Food plans fail when they count packages instead of meals, calories, dietary constraints, and fuel. Start with meals your household already eats. For each person, estimate ordinary daily energy needs with a qualified clinician or recognized nutrition guidance; adjust for age, illness, pregnancy, workload, and activity. Multiply by 90, then design a modest reserve. Do not use a single calorie target for every household.
Create a menu and inventory
Build a 14-day menu that can be repeated with substitutions. For each recipe, list ingredients, water, fuel, preparation time, cookware, and servings. Calculate the quantity per meal across 6.4 cycles (90 days ÷ 14), then add a margin for spills, extra need, or guests. Keep familiar shelf-stable foods, protein, fats, grains/starches, fruits/vegetables, and foods for allergies. Include ready-to-eat food for the first days when cooking or water is constrained. Store a manual can opener and utensils. Include coffee/tea and comfort foods when they fit the plan.
Use first-in, first-out rotation. Keep original labels and lot/expiration data; store dry goods cool, dry, dark, and pest-resistant. Repackage only when you understand food-safe oxygen absorbers, moisture control, and labeling. “Best by” is generally a quality date, not proof of safety; discard food with compromised packaging, pests, contamination, or unsafe temperature history. Follow USDA guidance for refrigerator/freezer outage durations and discard food held at unsafe temperatures. Never taste food to decide if it is safe.
Freeze-dried buckets can add convenient meals, but compute calories and servings from the actual label, account for water and fuel, and test representative meals. Variety, sodium, texture, and dietary fit matter over three months. A bucket is one component, not a complete household food plan.
Expanded operating detail — Food planning and linked shelf-stable examples
Build the 90-day reserve from recognizable foods the household already eats, then use freeze-dried meals for variety and emergency convenience. Store ready-to-eat foods for the first 72 hours, foods needing only minimal water/fuel for the next phase, and bulk staples for sustained use. Include protein, fats, carbohydrates, fruit/vegetable sources, seasonings, beverages, and nutrition/medical/dietary accommodations. Test meals before relying on them.
A workable purchasing structure
The prior food list underrepresented basic pantry staples. Add shelf-stable rice, beans, cooking oil and canned produce to the 14-day menu and buy quantities only after measuring calories, protein, fiber, sodium, water and cook time. Candidate examples: Amazon Grocery jasmine rice, 2 lb (NP-080)(candidate), Jack Rabbit pinto beans, 25 lb (NP-081)(candidate), Amazon Grocery canola oil, 48 fl oz (NP-082)(candidate), and Del Monte cut green beans, 8 oz, 12-pack (NP-083)(candidate). These are supplementary examples, not a complete menu; rice and dry beans need water and fuel, oil needs rotation, and canned vegetables alone do not cover produce/micronutrients.
Layer A — no-cook/low-water foods: ready-to-eat canned or pouched protein, nut butter, shelf-stable crackers, bars, dried fruit, and shelf-stable milk alternatives that household members tolerate. Keep a manual can opener. Track sodium, allergies, and any refrigeration-after-opening requirement.
Layer B — pantry staples: oats, rice, pasta, beans/lentils, canned tomatoes/vegetables/fruit, cooking oil, broth, powdered milk or an appropriate substitute, salt/spices, and sugar/honey. Buy sizes that can be consumed after opening; protect bulk dry goods from moisture/pests and label repackaged food with item/date/ingredients.
Layer C — just-add-water meals: freeze-dried or dehydrated breakfast and entrées. Use them to fill menu gaps, not as the entire plan. Add their required water, cook time, and fuel to the water and cooking calculations.

Purchase worksheet: Create a 14-day menu. Sum each dish’s label calories and portions, multiply by 6.43 cycles, then add a reserve. Count foods already in the pantry before ordering. Store and rotate by “use first” date. Freeze-dried buckets are usually expensive calories; pantry staples usually provide lower-cost calories but require water, cooking, pest protection, and rotation.
90-day food bill of materials: close the calorie gap before checkout
This is the calculation every article and shopping kit must point back to. It is a planning target, not a claim that the linked examples below already meet it. If all four residents used the illustrative 2,000 kcal/day target, the household would need 720,000 kcal for 90 days; adding a 10% reserve gives 792,000 kcal. Replace 2,000 with each resident’s actual needs. Use the Nutrition Facts panel on the exact package, not generic serving-count marketing.
- Create a spreadsheet row for every food: resident/allergen fit, exact package size, calories/package, packages on hand, packages needed, water per recipe, fuel minutes, protein/fat/fiber/sodium, best-by date, and meals assigned.
- Use
target kcal = sum(resident daily kcal × 90) × (1 + reserve fraction). Usepackages required = ceiling((target kcal allocated to that food) ÷ calories per package). Sum the package calories across all foods and require the total to meet the target. Keep a separate nutrition/variety check: calories alone do not establish adequacy. - Allocate the target across the family’s actual 14-day menu; multiply each ingredient by 90/14 = 6.43, then round up to whole packages. Add ready-to-eat meals for the period when water, fuel or illness limits cooking. Do not build the whole plan from rice, beans, oil or freeze-dried pails.
- Add a practical menu mix: grains/starches; legumes and other protein; shelf-stable animal or plant protein; fats; fruit; vegetables; calcium-containing foods or tolerated substitute; condiments; drinks; and allergy/medical-specific food. For each item, account for the water and fuel needed to make it edible. Dry beans, rice, oats and pasta are not ready-to-eat foods.
- Do a 7-day trial from the proposed inventory. Weigh/measure what is actually consumed, record waste and cooking fuel, and adjust the menu. Repeat the calculation for 90 days. Buy and rotate in stages if storage life, budget or storage conditions make a single bulk purchase impractical.
The linked rice, beans, oil, green beans, oats, peanut butter, tuna, pasta and emergency-meal products are examples only. Their combined calorie total has not been audited to 792,000 kcal, the linked set does not yet provide a balanced menu, and product offers/pack sizes must be rechecked. Therefore this article must not claim “90 days of food covered” until the worksheet is populated from the selected package labels and remaining shortfalls are visibly listed.
Part 3 KIT
Food reserve and rotation
A KIT is a subset of one shared household inventory. Items marked "shared" appear in other parts — count them once. This is not a complete 90-day plan.

- Pantry inventory, menu, allergy-safe substitutes, sealed storage bins, and a thermometer are household-specific. Verify label and storage conditions before purchase.
Additional linked kit items
- Shelf-stable meals and pantry: Mountain House Classic bucket (NP-002)(candidate), Ready Hour 120-serving entrée bucket (NP-003)(candidate), Augason Farms 30-day, one-person supply (NP-004)(candidate), Quaker oats 42 oz (NP-005)(candidate), Jif peanut butter twin pack (NP-006)(candidate), StarKist tuna 12-count (NP-007)(candidate), and Barilla whole-grain spaghetti (NP-008)(candidate).
- Access and use: OXO manual can opener (NP-001)(candidate). Check current label calories, package size, diet fit, prep water, and fuel; these examples do not total a complete 90-day diet without the household menu calculation.

How to size it and remaining 90-day gaps
Example planning target only: 720,000 kcal for 4×90×2,000; replace with individually appropriate targets. Build actual 14-day menu x 6.43 cycles; total label calories/macros; add additional dry beans/rice/oil/produce/protein and zero-cook food. Count water/fuel for each dish.
