Cooking and fuel: make food safely edible

A food reserve is useful only if the household can prepare it safely. Map each meal to a cooking method and calculate fuel from actual appliance specifications and planned runtime. Keep a no-cook menu for the first phase. Maintain at least two independent ways to heat food if conditions permit, with one that does not rely on grid power. Select fuels compatible with the appliance, and store fuel legally, away from heat and ignition, in manufacturer-approved containers.

Outdoor-only camp stoves, charcoal, and generators must never be used inside a home, tent, garage, or enclosed porch; carbon monoxide can kill without warning. Follow the exact appliance manual, clearances, leak checks, and local fire rules. Do not use an outdoor stove during dangerous winds or near combustible materials. Keep a fire extinguisher accessible and know when the correct response is to evacuate and call emergency services. Maintain a stable cooking surface, lighter/matches in waterproof storage, pot grippers, utensils, dishwashing water, and a way to keep food at safe temperatures.

Calculate fuel: planned burn hours × manufacturer consumption per hour × meals per day × days, then add a practical reserve. Test one planned meal under controlled, outdoor conditions; note water required, cook time, and fuel consumed. If the answer is too much stored fuel for your residence, revise toward no-cook foods, shared safe cooking resources, or evacuation rather than improvising unsafe storage.

Expanded operating detail — Cooking appliances, fuel and safe use

Cooking system 1 is a conventional outdoor propane stove. Cooking system 2 is a separate method suitable to the dwelling and local rules: a pre-existing outdoor grill, a wood-burning stove/fireplace already approved for the structure, or meals that need no cooking. Do not turn an outdoor camp stove into an indoor stove. Cooking system, heat system, and generator fuel are separate line items even when they use the same fuel type.

Linked cooking equipment

Fuel procurement plan

Do not buy a theoretical “90-day fuel stack” without appliance hours, fire code, storage location, and local fire rules. Measure consumption during practice: list meal, burn time by burner, fuel weight before/after, and water heated. Calculate measured fuel per planned meal × cooked meals per day × 90, then reduce the requirement with no-cook meals and safe alternative cooking. Add a reserve and maintain a separate emergency supply for heat if applicable.

  • Propane: cylinders and refill/exchange are generally best sourced through local authorized suppliers; verify cylinder type, regulator/hose, appliance compatibility, transport and storage rules. Store cylinders outdoors in approved positions and away from openings/ignition as local code and manufacturer require. A camp stove’s 1 lb cylinder use can become expensive and voluminous over three months; a properly regulated larger cylinder may be an option only if compatible and lawfully stored. Example: Coleman 16.4 oz disposable propane cylinder — ASIN B007X7ISZM(candidate). It is not a refillable tank; verify current offer/shipping and calculate quantities from practice.
  • Butane: use only the specified canister type and quantity. Protect from heat, puncture, and indoor storage restrictions. Do not use an improvised adapter. Coleman 8.8 oz butane canister — ASIN B001AXF48O(candidate) is a candidate; confirm the selected stove requires that exact fuel and that the canister can be shipped/stored legally.
  • Wood: buy seasoned, dry firewood locally by measured cord/rick units only for a code-compliant, already-installed appliance. A cord is 128 cubic feet stacked; actual winter consumption depends on climate, building, appliance efficiency, and burn hours. Firewood is not a generic universal emergency “fuel kit.” Store dry, off the ground, away from the structure as required by local fire guidance.
  • Gasoline: for a generator, fuel storage and turnover are material safety/quality constraints. Calculate load, runtime, and fuel burn from the exact generator manual; use approved containers, stabilizer where specified, and local storage limits. Never store or refuel indoors.

How to size it and remaining 90-day gaps

Choose one primary stove/fuel system and one tested backup. Record actual fuel used by the meal test and multiply by 13 weeks; store legally and safely. Wood/propane/butane bulk fuel, approved heating appliance/installation and firewood are local procurement, not covered by the small cylinders listed.
